A Brief History of the Family Dinner in America

The Family Dinner has become a daily ritual for millions of Americans. But it wasn’t always this way.

In fact, up until the late 18th century, American families didn’t dine together very often. Can you guess why? Well, houses of that time were not as large as today thus making it difficult to have a dedicated dining room. Also, most households had more family members than chairs making comfortable dining together almost impossible. So families would often eat in shifts or the adults would eat at the table while the kids would eat standing up.

Dining rooms and dining room tables started making their way into American homes around the 1770’s. One of the first American homes to have a proper dining room was Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, built in 1772.

By around 1850, dining rooms had become popular and made their way into most American homes. People viewed the family dinner as a way for parents to connect with their children. Also contributing to the increase in family dining was the fact that studies began to show that there are many physical and mental health benefits to dining together as a family.

But today, because of busy work schedules and cell phones, American families are struggling to enjoy meaningful, uninterrupted meals together – which is precisely why we created the CasaMia Pizza Make & Bake experience – so families could once again engage around the dinner table and create memorable moments.

We have our customers roll their own dough because the shapes people come up with almost always draw laughs, thus bringing loved ones closer together. This quote from one of our customers sums up the experience perfectly - "The best part was our teenage/adult son's saying "This is awesome. When can we do this again?" Amazing when I can get our son's to put their phones down and spending time as a family." (Thanks Gus!)

So as we move forward running to work, schools and soccer games, try to find just a little time to continue the American family dinner tradition  - your family will thank you. And if you're considering making homemade pizzas, we know of a great pizza service that will deliver everything you need direct to your door so you can make delicious, fresh, gourmet pizzas and make some great memories too. :)
